The EU is concerned that vehicles are not being correctly scrapped with heavy metals (eg lead, mercury and hexavalent chromium) entering the environment unnecessarily. The End-of Life Vehicle Directive requires vehicles and component parts to be scrapped through designated means. To help prevent unwanted heavy metals entering the environment they are banned from being used in cars unless there is no commercially feasible alternative (eg lead in car batteries). Commercial alternatives exist for wheel balance weights and this has required lead as material to be banned.

Lead is banned for cars and vehicles 3.5 tonnes and below

Trucks over 3.5 tonnes can still use lead weights

Motorcycles can still use lead weights

Effective 1st July 2005
